Name: Layne Klein

Age:53

Where you live: On the family farm in Forks Township, where I lived all my life.

Family: Wife Beth, son Jacob, daughters Amanda, Rebecca and Rachel.

Job title: Owner and operator of Klein Farms.

Where you work: Klein Farms Dairy and Creamery that sells raw milk, beef, cheese, eggs and yogurt to the public.

How long on the job? Worked while I was a kid. When I was 21, I took over operating the farm from my father and grandfather. It will be passed on to my children.

About your job: I milk 50 to 60 cows, twice a day, every day, feed and care for 160 animals, farm 170 acres, operate the dairy store, handle mechanical and electrical problems and whatever else needs to be done. My wife handles the bookwork. Farmers are jacks of all trades.

What do you like best about your job? I guess working with the cows. I enjoy milking them and since we opened the dairy store in 2004, I like dealing with the public. I think they appreciate what we do.

About this column: Each week Palmer-Forks Patch will feature volunteers, municipal employees, residents and everyday people who are making a difference in the community. Related Topics: Farming, Klein Farms, and Layne Klein
