Today is Ash Wednesday, at least for some of you.

When I was a kid, that meant the concept of giving something up for lent.

Sure, there was the rule against eating meat on Friday, which in our house either meant we'd order pizza, or my dad would make his amazing deviled crabs. Neither was exactly a hardship.

Earlier Christians were a bit more rigorous. In the sixth century, Pope Gregory wrote that "We abstain from flesh, meat, and from all things that come from flesh, as milk, cheese and eggs."

But aside from not eating certain foods, there's also the idea of giving up something you enjoy -- smoking, coffee, etc. -- during the 40 days of Lent.

So I'm curious whether we have readers who'll be doing that this year, and if so what they'll be abstaining from. Take our poll, and if you'd like, go into more detail in the comment section.
