Bugle Call "Taps" is 150 Years Old Today

Musicians across the United States will sound a special tribute to "Taps" on its 150th birthday

The mournful, iconic notes of America's most famous bugle call will sound at special ceremonies to mark the melody's 150th birthday today. "Taps" began "as a replacement signal to order lights out at the end of the day in the military," according to Taps150.org. The website goes on to explain that the song evolved "into funeral honors accorded all uniformed persons who have faithfully served our country." Facts about "Taps": Here are the original lyrics to "Taps": Day is done, gone the sun From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky All is well, safely rest God is nigh. Fading light dims the sight And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright From afar, drawing near Falls the night. Thanks and praise for our days Neath the sun, neath the stars…

Sponsors and vendors sought for annual Forks Township Community Days in September.

With only four months to go, organizers of Forks Township Community Days are gearing up for the township's annual September event. Community Days Chairman Brian Lokitis, president of the Business and Commerce Association of Forks Township, is putting together plans for the festivities on Sept. 15-16. "This is going to be the biggest year ever," Lokitis said. Lokitis hopes that more people will be drawn from neighboring communities besides Forks Township due to changes in rules regarding the beer tent. This year, patrons will be allowed to carry their beer around the festival grounds where before they had been contained to a fenced-in area around the beer tent. Lokitis has sent the word out in a letter to the community that Community Days…

Forks Township Recreation Plan Under Further Review

Five-year plan for recreation and parks in Forks Township now headed to Recreation Board, Planning Commission for approval before going to supervisors.

The much-anticipated Forks Township Five-Year Parks and Recreation Plan continues to be bogged down in red tape. Forks Township Manager John Cornell had hoped last Thursday to get the blessing of the Board of Supervisors on the township's recreation plan. Now, the document -- which has seen numerous reworkings -- is going to the Board of Recreation for its approval at a May 20 meeting before returning to the supervisors again. The plan provides a blueprint for how the township should spend money on recreation over the next five years. Figures have not been released to the public. Neither have details. Prior proposals have included items such as reconditioning the tennis courts and basketball court at Community Park, reviewing the bike …

"Cottage in the Woods" has Uncertain Future

Forks Township officials consider if the "Cottage in the Woods" on Zucksville Road could become a place for artists.

They call it the "Cottage in the Woods." For the past three years, this cottage at 700 Zucksville Road has sat vacant, awaiting its future after serving as the home of an Easton machine shop owner in the 1940s. "It's a cute little old building, one of those things you remember when you were kids," said Carl Miller, president of the Forks Township Historical Society. Township officials are now trying to determine its fate. Township Supervisor David Billings said the Board of Supervisors should receive some options about what to do with the property in the next month or two. Miller said the historical society and the township's arts society are interested in using the property as either a home base, a meeting place or a location to showcase …

Dick Clark Made Dream Come True for My Father

Forks Township man performed song on "American Bandstand" in November 1960.

For most of us, Dick Clark was the man who ushered in a new year. For others, he was the host of numerous game shows. And for the older generations, he was the man who brought music to the mainstream and the masses. For my father, Frank Ciliberti of Forks Township, Dick Clark will always be a special part of his life. It's not every day you can tell people that you're father appeared on "American Bandstand." But that's what my father did long ago before I was born, performing solo on the popular show that Clark made famous first in Philadelphia and later in Los Angeles. My father was one of first in music history to cover "Rock Around the Clock." Now had he been the first to sing that song, like Bill Haley and the Comets, our lives may …

Story Time Brings Smiles at Palmer Park Mall

Program encourages literacy and early learning. Two more scheduled for May and June.

For a half-hour, several children -- and their parents -- had a chance to sing and smile. Over four months, the Local Education and Resource Network (LEARN) is sponsoring story time at the Palmer Park Mall. "This is a showcase of low-cost and no-cost activities," said Jan Schwartz, LEARN's local coordinator. The program is for children up to age 5. Schwartz started Tuesday morning's program with the 12 children and eight parents with a song, "Five Little Ducks," before reading a book about a squirrel searching for nuts. She then concluded with a sing-along of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat." "It's great," said Melanie Rizzardi of Forks Township, who brought her daughter Maggie, 3, to the reading. "Maggie loves stories and lives being read too. I…

Forks Officials Call Work on Amphitheater 'Shoddy'

Forks Township officials hold back $30,000 in payments for the amphitheater until work is done to correct structural and cosmetic problems.

Forks Township officials are holding back a $30,000 payment to a construction company, stating that its work on the township's new amphitheater is "shoddy." "We have a lot of quality control issues that we're dealing with," Public Works Director Mark Roberts said Thursday. "But it just wasn't the quality work we were looking for. We are working to make things right." Have you seen the new amphitheater? How does it look to you? Leave a comment. Roberts and Board of Supervisors Chairman Erik Chuss said there were about a half-dozen items that needed to be addressed. The main issues include: "We understand that there were going to be punch list items," Chuss said. "But we were surprised." Roberts said some steps were different sizes, about …

I'd have to disagree with you Marty. I don't see the design as beautiful. It kind of reminds me of a mushroom. This design IS intended to amplify sound, that is why it is called an "amphi"theatre. However, I have brought it to the BOS' attention that it should not be called an amphitheatre because the prefix "amphi-" is greek and means "around" or "on both sides." There is nothing "around" or "on…   more ›
