Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
Summer is just heating up as we head toward the Fourth of July. So what do you like most about summer? Take our poll below.
Apparently, the recession is over when it comes to love or at least Valentine's Day. The average person expects to spend more than $126 on the holiday, the highest in the National Retail Federation survey's 10-year history. But the kicker is that the average man expects to spend more than $160 on clothing, jewelry and greeting cards. But women will spend about half that, according to the survey. Certainly, Valentine's Day is supposed to be the day for lovers, but the marketing is geared more towards men buying gifts for women. How did that happen? Is it fair? Men: Do you feel left out? Women…
Social media networks were set aflutter with the hint that Matthew Broderick may be reprising his Ferris Bueller role in a Super Bowl ad tomorrow. “How can I handle work on a day like today?” he says in the opening frame. With less the big game just a day away, commercials are a hot topic, along with whether Eli Manning or Tom Brady will be the hero of Super Bowl XVLI. According to businessinsider.com, 2012 will go down as a banner year for the event. The top price NBC got for an ad is $4 million, and on average, the network sold 30-second spots for $3.5 million each. Just about everyone has …
There is a saying in politics, that if everyone is unhappy about a decision, then chances are it was the right one. In local politics, someone is always unhappy. Palmer Supervisors, for example, adopted the township’s $14.1 million 2012 budget with no new taxes, but this did not happen without some significant slashing, including more than $230,000 from the police department. Similarly, Forks Township passed its budget without a tax increase, giving Forks Police about the same budget this year as last, though allocating $0 for new purchases.  Both townships are also building new public works …
The Easton Area School Board's athletic committee has begun looking at whether the district should collect a fee for charter/cyber school students who play district sports or join school clubs. According to the Morning Call, the district would get the schools to reimburse it a flat or sliding fee depending on the number of extracurricular activities the students were involved in. Athletic director James Pokrivsak told the Call's Samantha Marcus the district sports teams had three charter/cyber students in the 2011-2012 school year, but noted "We're getting more and more of these requests." …
First, for those not current on their Roman Numerals, "XLVI" equals 46 (L = 50 minus X = 10, plus v = 5 plus I =1). Romans must have had a good sense of humor about numbers. Anyway, Super Bowl 46, on Feb. 5, will be a rematch of the 2008 game when the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots. (That was Super Bowl XLII = 42). In that game, Big Blue ruined a perfect season for the Pats with a 17-14 win. It's rare to see someone sporting Pats colors here, but the Giants are well represented. Who do you predict will win Super Bowl XLVI? Disgruntled Eagles and Steelers fans can feel free to …
Thousands of people lined the streets of State College to pay their respects to Joe Paterno, whose funeral procession passed by Beaver Stadium and a number of other Penn State landmarks before the legendary coach was laid to rest. The private funeral was attended by family, players and friends of the coaching legend. A public memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center and will be televised live on WFMZ-TV, Channel 69.
The National Weather Service reports a possible accumulation of 2 to 4 inches of snow today. For some, that's good news. The weather is suppose to turn to rain by Sunday and wash all the snow away. For some, that's better news. In Palmer Township, residents have within 12 hours to clear their sidewalks once the snow has stopped falling. Forks Township has the same 12-hour rule, but admits it enforces that rule "loosely." However, the township expects sidewalks to be passable within 24 hours. With sun and temperatures predicted to be in the high 30s Sunday afternoon, and rain at night, chances…
