Holden Ousted from Congress by Cartwright

Longest-serving member of Pennsylvania congressional delegation loses Democratic primary fight in redrawn district that includes parts of Northampton County.

U.S. Rep. Tim Holden, the most senior member of Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation, has been knocked out of office by a Democratic primary challenger who hails from a part of the state Holden had not represented at all during his 20 years in the House. Matt Cartwright, a personal injury attorney and political newcomer from outside Scranton, defeated Holden on Tuesday to win the Democratic nomination in the redrawn 17th Congressional District, which includes a significant portion of Northampton County. The general election in November will now be a race between Cartwright – who attacked Holden for having a voting record not progressive enough for most Democrats – and Scranton Tea Party founder Laureen Cummings, who was the only …

5 Things to Know About the Holden/Cartwright Race

Democratic primary for 17th district will be decided Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Democratic voters in the Easton area -- as well as numerous other counties -- will decide who they want to represent them in Congress: U.S. Rep. Tim Holden, or challenger Matt Cartwright.  Holden, 55 and from Schuylkill County, has been in Congress for 20 years, but it was only until recently -- due to congressional redistricting -- that his representing the Lehigh Valley was even a possibility.  In addition to the Easton area and much of Northampton County, the new 17th district includes Holden's home county, as well Monroe, Lackwanna, Luzerne and Carbon counties. Cartwright, 50 and from the town of Moosic south of Scranton, is an attorney who has been presented as a more liberal alternative to Holden, who's known as a "Blue …

Easton Democrats Rally For Obama

Local Democrats celebrate opening of Obama for America office.

Re-electing President Barack Obama is the only way to help cities like Easton, Mayor Sal Panto told local Democrats Thursday. Panto was speaking at the grand opening for the Obama re-election campaign's office on Larry Holmes Drive, which will serve as headquarters for the Easton area, Nazareth area, and the Slate Belt. Speaking to several dozen people in the parking lot of the former Ringside building, Panto recalled "inheriting" Easton at a time of economic hardship. "I can't imagine what President Obama felt when he inherited the United States of America," in the midst of even greater turmoil, the mayor said, arguing that the election is a choice between Obama and candidates "who want to reward recklessness, not responsibility." …

Not to sound like I'm picking sides here but Mr O'Rielly is one of the most famously classess acts on TV. He often raises his voice and opinions are based on thin if not imaginary points. It has always bothered me that his television program runs on a news channel. To me he's just as outrageous as Howard Stern. Except Stern doesn't fool others into thinking its a factual news program since it …   more ›

Cusick Re-Elected Northampton County Council President After Initial Deadlock

Republican majority chooses Northampton County Councilman John Cusick as president for another year.

Reorganization doesn't seem to be simple, at least where Northampton County Council is concerned. Last year, Council President Ron Angle lost his seat after his fellow Republicans instead backed Councilman John Cusick. This year, Cusick kept his seat, but only after a challenge from council's Democrats on council that ended with a tie vote, causing council to put the meeting on hold until member Bruce Gilbert arrived to break the tie. Councilwoman Peg Ferraro -- who was re-elected Vice President without challenge -- nominated Cusick.  Councilman Lamont McClure, a Democrat, was also nominated as president. The resulting 4-4 vote meant that council effectively had no president, and thus the meeting was put on hold until Gilbert arrived. But …
