Big Woody's Annual Wing-Off Competition Draws Huge Crowd

Two-time winner Justin Vernon of Kunkletown crowned this year's winner.

For some Forks Township residents, the National Football League's Superbowl XLV was not the only major event yesterday, it was Big Woody's Sports Bar and Restaurant's fourth annual Wing-Off competition.

Twenty-two hopefuls, most of which were from Lehigh Valley, competed for the coveted title of  "King of Wings" and the grand prize cash award of $2,000. But one competitor, Justin Vernon of Kunkletown, was hoping to return for a third win.

"Oh yeah.  He's prepared.  He's always hungry," said Justin's brother Kyle Vernon.

Vernon would finish on top with 43 wings downed in five minutes beating out his own record of 36 wings last year and this year's goal of 40 wings.

Competition rules were simple. Contestants are given five minutes to eat as many wings as possible. Each contestant is watched closely to ensure that all food is chewed and kept down.  The trays of bones consumed in the competition are then taken away to be counted by two employees and one witness to guarantee accuracy.  Runners up also receive monetary prizes in the competition ranging from $200 to $50.
