Forks Skate Park on Track for June

Ground broken behind fire station in Forks Township Friday on new skate park. The park could be ready to open by the end of June, officials said.

They're starting to roll with it.

The Forks Township Public Works Department was out Friday morning digging the foundation for the township's new skate park.

"We're ready to move forward," Recreation Director Rachel Sulzbach said recently.

Sulzbach recently told the Board of Supervisors that the Skate Park Committee approved the design of the skate park and the supervisors, skaters and Police Chief Greg Dorney signed off on it as well.

One change was putting the park together in one phase instead of two.

"We're doing everything at once, which is going to save money," she said.

The skate park is included in the township's five-year parks and recreation plan. It was estimated that the skate park, which would be between the fire station and Community Park, may cost $76,000.

Sulzbach said the township was within its skate park budget and had also applied for a $100,000 grant.

"If we get the grant, we'll be under budget," she said.

Supervisors Chairman Erik Chuss said in an email Friday that the surface should be installed in the next week or two and the equipment would follow soon after that.

Sulzbach said that once the pad is poured and equipment installed—possibly the third or fourth week of May—then the park could be finished by the end of June.

Township officials made sure to get input from local skaters on the design aspects.

Supervisor John O'Neil praised Sulzbach for her efforts.

"Thank you for getting this moving," he said.
