Potty Training

When is it right to start?

Moms Talk is a new feature on Palmer-Forks Patch that is part of a new initiative on our Patch sites to reach out to moms and families.

Palmer-Forks Patch invites you and your circle of friends to help build a community of support for mothers and their families right here in Palmer and Forks townships.

Moms, dads, grandparents and the diverse families who make up our community will have a new resource for questions about local neighborhood schools, the best pediatricians, 24-hour pharmacies and the thousands of other issues that arise while raising children.

Moms Talk will also be the place to drop in for a talk about the latest parenting hot topic. Do you know of local moms raising their children in the Tiger Mother's way and is it the best way? Where can we get information on local flu shot clinics for children? How do we talk to our children about the Tucson shootings? How can we help our children's schools weather their budget cutbacks?

So grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today.

When is the right age to start potty training?

I recently saw a television segment that talked about potty training and a 2-year-old who was suspended from her daycare for one month for having "one too many" accidents.

In the video footage one mom advocated starting potty training as early as possible. Her son was urinating in the toilet at 4 months! The story went on to talk about how many parents feel pressured to start training their children early.

I have a 22-month-old for whom I have purchased training tools but have yet to actually start training. I feel added pressure from my siblings who have already experienced training their children and have even been subjected to teasing about how she "isn't trained yet!?"

So I ask the question. Should we pressure our kids into potty training early or wait it out?
