Forks Weis Gears Up for Grand Opening

The latest in supermarket design and variety is coming to Forks.

Grand opening day for the new Weis Markets store in Forks Township has been set for June 26.

Site and structural preparations have been under way for months and are virtually complete. The new 63,400-square-foot facility, which the company calls "state of the art," is at Sullivan Trail and Uhler Road and is currently being outfitted and stocked. The store includes a pharmacy and an in-store café, and there also will be a gas station.

“This store has larger departments, and the design is more intimate in scale,” said Dennis Curtin, Weis' director of public relations. “When you come into the store, you’ll be able to immediately figure out the way you want to go.”

Besides offering the latest in design and layout, the store will include “expansive perishable departments and a center store offering increased variety,” Curtin said.

“This will be the 11th of our stores with a café selling beer,” he added. “And at the Weis gas station, you get 10 cents off per gallon when you spend $50.”

In the days leading up to the store’s grand opening, Weis will be distributing 4,000 reusable bags to homes in the surrounding neighborhoods. The bags will contain a mix of products and coupons.

There are many green features in the new supermarket, the company says, including advanced refrigeration and climate control technologies. Compared with supermarkets of older designs, Weis expects to reduce refrigerant usage by half in the new store. The store also has thermal-rated windows, reflective roofs and skylights for natural lighting, according to Curtin.

Weis Markets is on an aggressive growth curve. The company is opening three stores this summer, including the one in Forks. There are 162 stores scattered across five states—Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Maryland and West Virginia. The company was founded in 1912 and is headquartered in the central Pennsylvania town of Sunbury (Northumberland County).
