New Law Coming on Recycling Old Electronics

Christmas and the New Year have come and gone, but you might have a lot of holiday remnants sticking around: shredded wrapping paper, cardboard boxes, empty wine/champagne bottles, etc.

All that stuff can be recycled at places such as Palmer Township's recycling center.

Meanwhile, if you're looking to recycle old electronics, there's a new law you should know about.

As reported by Amanda Gilloly on one of our western Pennsylvania sites, the state’s new Covered Device Recycling Act takes effect Jan. 24, requiring the recycling of all TVs and computer equipment discarded by households, businesses and institutions.

The law provides free recycling for these devices being disposed of by households and businesses with fewer than 50 employees. Larger businesses are required to pay for electronics recycling.

In Northampton County, there are four places that accept old electronics:

• The Best Buy off of Route 33 in Bethlehem Township. (610-250-2689)
• The Grand Central Sanitary Landfill outside Pen Argyl. (610-863-2395)
• Double-Click Computers on Route 191/Nazareth Pike. (610-865-4999)
• The Bethlehem Goodwill (610-866-1778)
