Do You Remember Tropical Storm Irene?

Lehigh Valley battered by brutal storm a year ago, causing flooding, sinkholes in Forks Township.

The reports of Tropical Storm Isaac touching mainland make many of us think back to a year ago this time: When Tropical Storm Irene was pounding the Lehigh Valley.

The storm was planned to arrive as a full-force hurricane, but tappered off into a tropical storm. Still, with heavy winds and rain, Irene packed a wallop.

While Palmer Township sustained some flooding, Forks Township took the brunt of the storm.

The first day of school was canceled in the Easton Area School District because of storm damage.

The Bushkill Creek overflowed, shutting numerous roads around Forks Township.

Because of all the pressure, a sinkhole opened up in a Sullivan Trail strip center, closing businesses like SuperCuts for several weeks and Big Woody's for a few months.

Sinkholes also appeared in the Penn Ridge development, causing a dispute among homeowners and township residents as to whom should foot the bill for the repair work.

And residents living along the Delaware River were ordered to evacuate their homes as flood levels threatened to overtake them.

Forks Township received $16,663 for the damage caused by Irene.

Isaac is on a path to hit New Orleans, seven years after Hurricane Katrina nearly wiped out the city.
