A member of Easton Area High School’s Class of 2013 received a graduation present quite different from those of his peers—criminal charges for allegedly forging checks totaling $555.

Court records say Nathan D. Coon, 18, of 830 Hoyt St. on Easton’s South Side, forged the signature of his mother’s husband on three checks dated Feb. 19, Feb. 22 and May 14.

An information sheet in Coon’s file says he recently graduated from Easton Area High School and was scheduled to begin a job at a trucking company.

The records say Coon cashed the checks at Lafayette Ambassador Bank, 280 Line St., also on the city’s South Side..

City Patrolman Tom Beiser writes in a criminal complaint that on May 14, he spoke to Coon’s mother, who said the bank informed her that her son cashed three checks with what appeared to be a forged signature of her husband.

The mother confirmed the signature was not that of her husband. She also said neither she nor her husband authorized issuing the checks to her son, the complaint says.

Coon, whose file also lists the address of 823 W. Young St., Apt. 2, also on Easton’s South Side, was charged with three counts of forgery – a level-three felony. An arrest warrant was approved May 23.

He was arraigned Saturday by on-duty District Judge John Capobianco of Nazareth and released on $2,500 unsecured bail.
