Cottage in Woods Debated by Residents

The controversial Cottage in the Woods in Forks Township could cost over $50,000 to renovate and refurbish.

They came to debate.

Residents showed up at last week's Forks Township Board of Supervisors meeting to debate and discuss the controversial Cottage in the Woods on Zucksville Road.

Township officials are obtaining cost estimates to see how much it may take to get the structure renovated and refurbished.

"It's a big waste of money to improve that small place," Margaret Carpin said. "You should knock it down. The house is so small and can't function efficiently. What's the sense of dumping money into this old building? It's not a money pit but close to it."

But resident Charles Hanson believes the cottage is worth preserving.

"I believe in historic homes," Hanson said. "It's a very attractive gardening spot. And it's a very practical space for art society meetings. You should try to save it."

Forks officials are awaiting estimates for the cost of mold remediation.

Public Works Director Mark Roberts said that he hopes to have estimates in time for the July 2 worksession meeting.

Supervisors Chairman Erik Chuss had wanted to discuss the cottage at Thursday night's supervisors meeting so not to delay discussion for another month.

But other supervisors cautioned, saying it should be placed properly on the agenda at the July meeting for discussion.

"We had two opposite opinions," Supervisor Dan Martyak said. "This is a very visible issue within our township. It should be posted on the agenda formally."
