Forks Canada Geese “Problems” Under Control

No signs of return for Canada geese at Community Park

The presence of Canada geese at a Forks Township park, creating what an official called a "disgusting" situation, appears to be under control.

Rachel Sulzbach, director of the township Parks and Recreation Department, said she received several complaints from residents about the geese throughout Community Park and leaving droppings all over grass and the park path.

In an attempt to thwart the geese, the township decided to rope off the pond area. The pond has been roped off with 3,000 feet of roping placed in a north-south flying pattern 10-feet apart, according to Sulzbach.

Sulzbach said since roping off the pond area, the geese have retreated to areas outside the park. As of Tuesday, there were only signs of geese flying over. No geese were anywhere to be found around the pond area.  According to Sulzbach, some 50 or so geese congregated at the pond a little more than a week ago.

“There were droppings all over the place,” she said. “It was disgusting!”

Four coyote decoys have been ordered to deter the birds from returning. The decoys cost $40 each and are expected to be in sometime next week.  In the interim, the township has positioned a decoy at the pond that was borrowed from a public works employee.  The decoys will be moved frequently in an effort to continue to deter the geese.

“You have to move them around so the geese won’t get used to seeing them,” she said.

The decoys will also be removed each night in order to deter possible vandals.
