Forks Hires Recreation Manager

Matthew Carfagno set to start March 28

Forks Township has hired a new recreation manager to work alongside the recently created position of parks and recreation director.

On Thursday, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the hiring of Matthew Carfagno. He is a 2008 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, where he earned a degree in Recreation and Leisure Services Management. Carfagno will be paid an annual salary of $36,000. He is scheduled to start work on March 28.

The position will report directly to recently hired Township Parks and Recreation Director Rachel Sulzbach, who was hired in November.

More than 200 applicants responded to the position that was advertised in January. Supervisors Robert Egolf and C. David Howell initially expressed reservations about hiring Carfagno. He was not on hand to be questioned by the supervisors.

“I believe that a lot of work for the manager of the community center is in scheduling, which is an insurmountable task at times,” Egolf said. “I don’t see any gross experience in large scale experience in scheduling.”

However, both supervisors said they were confident in the hiring committee's recommendations.

“I have absolute confidence in the people that did the interviewing for this position,” Supervisor Lilly Gioia said.
