Forks Looks Into Security Cameras for Park

Hope is to deter vandals and mischievous behavior

Security cameras may soon be installed around Forks Community Park.

Vandals and mischievous behavior have prompted the township to look into installing motion-detecting security cameras.

Although an actual cost has yet to be determined, the equipment will not exceed $6,000. The Forks Township Athletic Association has sought out vendors for the equipment. The association is still waiting for final numbers from one potential vendor before presenting those figures to the township, said Dan Martyak, president of the Forks Township Youth Sports Organization.

“This includes the wiring and potential monitor in real time and will activate motion lights in critical areas, and some cameras may have motion as well, said township police Chief Greg Dorney.

The project will be paid for by the township and the FTAA.

Dorney and Martyak said the cameras would help to deter mischievous behavior at the park, particularly during evening hours. Martyak said vandals have damaged the concession and storage building on several occasions over the past year, breaking windows and painting graffiti. Dorney said he has had several incidents in the wooded areas of the park as well.

“It’s readily apparent that whatever expenditure we make we save in vandalism,” said Supervisor Lilly Gioia.

The FTAA had already discussed spending $2,500, Martyak said, so an additional $500 to split the cost of the cameras with the township should not be an issue. The township could vote on approving the purchase when the supervisors meet at 7:30pm Thursday.
