Forks Police Chief Presents 2011 End of Year Report

Forks Police Chief will present the 2011 year-end report to the township tonight, and developer Gary Strausser will make a proposal that the township take over maintenance of Winchester Drive.

Police Chief Gregory Dorney will give a short presentation tonight on his 2011 end-of-year report to the Forks Township Board of Supervisors.

Dorney presented the report to supervisors Feb. 1 and asked each of them to review it before tonight’s meeting.

Dorney also asked that the report be published on the township’s website after his presentation. On Feb. 1, Dorney also entered several accomplishments by the police department, including:

  1. National Take Back Initiative: The police department will be partnering with the Giant Pharmacy and the Drug Enforcement Administration to conduct a collection site where residents can legally and properly dispose of no-longer-needed prescription medications.  This will be conducted on April 28.
  2. BUPA Teen Mobilization: The police department has been selected to participate and received grant funding to complete an educational and enforcement detail in reference to the new teen seat belt laws.  Forks PD will be partnering with The Career Institute of Technology, which serves students from five area high schools, including Easton Area High School.
  3. PA Council of Juvenile Probation Officers:  The police department just completed a site visit inspection to confirm compliance with a waiver from monthly reporting to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Normally police departments must report monthly any and all contact with juveniles to ensure legal compliance.  In 2004, Dorney applied for a waiver from that requirement due to the implementation of formal policy and accredited standards adopted. The department has been exempt since then. The department is visited every three years to ensure compliance. This occurred on Jan. 12 and all was determined to be in compliance.
  4. PCCD Victims Compensation Assistance Program:  The police department was once again recognized as one of only 168 out of 1,252 departments to consistently comply with the Crime Victims Act.
  5. CHILD SAFETY SEATS: The department is receiving 28 new child safety seats via a grant. The department provides seats to residents who need them on a temporary basis or for residents who as result of financial hardship cannot afford them.

Also on the agenda, supervisors will consider builder Gary Strausser's proposal about Winchester Drive in his Riverview Estates development.

Strausser wants the township to take it over because, he said previously, it costs him too much to maintain it himself.
