Forks Township Manager has Emergency Heart Bypass

A month after starting job, Forks Township Manager John Cornell has emergency triple bypass surgery.

A little more than a month after starting his new job, is out of action after undergoing an emergency triple bypass operation, township officials said.

Chairman Erik Chuss announced at Thursday's meeting that Cornell was "a little bit under the weather" and wasn't attending.

"He's out for a little while," Chuss said. "He did not quit, leave or escape. He should be back soon."

When asked before the meeting why Cornell has been missing from recent municipal functions, Supervisor Bob Egolf said that Cornell had undergone an emergency triple bypass over two weeks ago.

"He's all right," said Egolf, who stated he was surprised since Cornell had a clean bill of health when he was examined by a doctor prior to his hiring by Forks Township.

Cornell, 55, of Souderton missed last week's round-table discussion with businesses.

Three "Meet and Greet" sessions with Cornell for the public were also canceled, including one scheduled for late Thursday afternoon.

Cornell started in the position in early April. He was chosen among 50 candidates and will earn a $92,000-a-year salary plus a $200 car stipend.

Township officials said Cornell has been instrumental so far in working with other department heads and officials to get projects and programs moving along, such as the controversial five-year parks and recreation plan.
