Forks Supervisors Say 'No' to Welcome Signs

Forks supervisors complain about costs and the slogan for proposed Welcome Signs.

The Business and Commerce Association of Forks Township requested that the board of supervisors match $1,000 to apply for a grant that would pay for in the township. The signs would have also included the association's slogan "You're in Good Company."

But supervisors weren't so welcoming at their meeting Thursday.

The motion made by Supervisors Chairman Erik Chuss did not receive a second  and the proposal died.

Township Manager John Cornell suggested supervisors apply for the grant, given that they would have a year to come up with a plan for the signs. But that wasn't good enough for some supervisors.

"We got this proposal on Tuesday. It's Thursday," Supervisor David Billings said. "We can't create a motto. It's not right. I can't support this."

Supervisor Bob Egolf said he had a lot of problems with the proposal.

"I'd like to see what the signs look like, how many colors, the shape and see some specifics," Egolf said. "[The township has] a logo and a symbol. Would that be incorporated?"

Egolf said he didn't like BCAF's slogan either.

"'You're in Good Company' is a trite phrase," he said. "I don't see it as exciting, creative or dynamic."

The deadline to apply is May 31.

"I like the slogan," Chuss said. "I'm OK with the phrase."

Billings said most people wouldn't understand what the slogan means. He also believed that the township would never get its money back.

"I thought BCAF was going to fund this," Billings said. "This slogan needs to be thought out. We need public input."
