Forks Township Youth Sports Organization Gets a Place to Call Home

Five-acre parcel adjacent to Township Community Center to be used by FTYSO come 2012

The Forks Township Youth Sports Organization will have a home to play come 2012.

On Thursday, organization President Dan Martyak was on hand at the township Board of Supervisors meeting to request re-graded and sod laid down along with a use extension on a 5-acre parcel located at the Community Park on Zucksville Road.

The board voted 3-2 in favor of allowing the organization use of the parcel for play. The organization will now be able to play on the fields through 2014.

Voting against the use of the fields were Supervisors C. David Howell and Lilly Gioia.

Both expressed concern over potential traffic problems in the area during games.

“There’s not been an impact proposal on parking in the neighborhood so I am reluctant to vote,” said Supervisor Lilly Gioia.

“I think the parking has to be settled,” said Howell. “You’re talking about three years of playing. There needs to be a parking plan.”

In September board members agreed to go ahead and allow use of the fields because the traffic impact study was a separate concern.

The hope had been to have the seeding done by May 2010 in order to have the fields ready for the 2012 spring season. But that will likely be delayed with weather conditions and additional drainage still needing to be done on the parcel, officials said.
