Free Mold Removal Coming for Cottage in Woods?

The Cottage in the Woods continues to be a source of discussion for Forks Township officials.

Should it stay or should it go?

The Cottage in the Woods' chances of survival may have improved at last week's Forks Township Board of Supervisors meeting when a cleaning company offered its services to perform mold remediation for free.

Mold removal has been the biggest cost concern for sparing the Zucksville Road structure from the wrecking ball.

At the supervisors work session last Thursday, Township Manager John Cornell said ServiceMaster Cleaning and Restoration has offered to pick up the tab for removing the mold as a community service, the Allentown Morning Call reported.

Township officials seem to like the option, the Easton Express-Times reported.

"That is like a windfall for us," Cornell said, the newspaper reported.

"I think it's a real plus for us," echoed Mark Roberts, township public works director.

The cost to refurbish the Cottage in the Woods could reach $50,000 as many have predicted. That has prompted some supervisors like Bob Egolf to say it should be razed.

Egolf said Wednesday that he's hopeful.

“If all efforts to remediate the Cottage are successful and our costs do not exceed $50,000, then I would not consider razing the building.  I’m optimistic that we just might find a beneficial use for it after all.”
