Northwood Avenue Reopening Again

Northwood Avenue was reopening Wednesday after the installation of a water main.

Northwood Avenue is finally reopening.

After being shut nearly two weeks for repair work, the main artery between Forks Township and Palmer and Lower Nazareth townships was expected to reopen sometime Wednesday.

The road has been plagued by sinkhole problems for the past few months, about three times in a month.

But this time the closure was caused by the installation of a water main.

Public Safety Director Tom Adams informed the Palmer Township Board of Supervisors Monday night that he had discussed the repair work recently with the Easton Suburban Water Authority.

"They are telling me it's going to open up sometime Wednesday," Adams said.

Adams said the ESWA will stripe the road and provide a temporary patch before doing some permanent paving in the near future.

The road's reopening is a relief to residents who have had to find shortcuts to get to Route 248, either heading down the detour on Tatamy Road or cutting around the Palmer Park Mall.

In late May, two weeks after Northwood Avenue in Palmer Township was shut by a sinkhole, another one opened up, this time swallowing part of a Lowe's truck, authorities said.

Sinkholes that shut Northwood Avenue, the key road connecting Forks Township to Palmer and Lower Nazareth townships, happened in early April and returned in early May as well.

The road was closed on a Thursday in early April due to a water main break that caused two sinkholes. Crews from Easton Suburban Water Authority worked around the clock to fix and fill the sinkholes and get the road reopened three days later.
