One-Lane Route 22 Traffic Takes Fourth of July Break

Single lane traffic on Route 22 near Easton is expected to resume July 8.

Lane closures connected to Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission's Route 22 bridge project are taking a long Fourth of July holiday.

The commission suspended lane closures for the project Wednesday "as an accommodation for work that PennDOT is conducting along Route 22 west," it said in a news release.

Earlier this month, the commission began closing lanes as part of a $30 million project to rehabilitate the bridge between Easton and Phillipsburg, as well as someone of the surrounding exits and overpasses.

The work is expected to take until early 2015, and will involve Route 22 being reduced to one lane during part of that time -- six months this year and another nine months in 2014.

The lane closures will resume at 5 a.m. on July 8. Eastbound trafic will merge into a single lane near the cemetery curve in Easton, between the 13th Street and Fourth Street exits. On the westbound sound, the single lane will begin near the toll plaza in New Jersey.

To avoid traffic, the DRJTBC has asked drivers to use Interstate 78.
