Palmer Premieres Canine Adoption Process

Dogs kept in township kennels for seven days before process starts.

Palmer Township is trying to find stray and abandoned dogs new homes.

The police department has launched a canine adoption policy where it tries to find new homes for the dogs after keeping them in kennels for seven days.

The police department makes attempts to get lost dogs back first to their owners.

Anyone interested in adopting a lost dog needs to fill out a canine adoption application and submit it to Police Chief Larry Palmer, 5 Weller Place, Palmer, Pa. 18045.

A committee of two police officers, a community member and a member of the public works department reviews all applicants and selects potential adopters.

The police chief must sign off on the final candidate for all adoptions. The adopter must fill out a canine adoption contract and agree to have the dogs neutered or spayed within state guidelines.

Any Palmer Township resident who loses a dog should check the Palmer police Facebook page and call the police department at 610-253-5844 to inquire whether their dog has been picked up.

The Northampton County Dispatch (610-759-2200) will also place the dog on a watch list.
