Palmer Township Saves $15,000 on Streetlight Power

Palmer Township will switch electricity providers and save $15,000 on streetlights.

gave the OK Monday to switch from Met-Ed and PPL to another vendor that will save Palmer $15,000 a year on power to streetlights.

About 95 percent of Palmer’s streetlights are lit by Met-Ed and the rest by PPL, said Public Works Director Thomas Adams. This had cost the township about $120,000 a year.

Adams got a new contract with Constellation Energy through the Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities, which represents local governments in finding deals that maximize cost savings.

The contract with Constellation starts in December and runs to the end of 2014. The savings are so great because the power rate in based on off-peak hours -- when streetlights are on.

Palmer Township entered into a similar contract with Constellation Energy last year for the township’s other electricity needs.
