Plans for a Skate Park in Forks Back on Table

The recreation department will submit plans to Forks Township Supervisors on May 3 for a skate park at the Community Center.

 

Plans to build a skate park in have been an on-again, off-again project for years. As of last Thursday, it’s on again.

Forks Supervisors asked that the present plans for a skate park at the board’s May 3 meeting.

Last year, the supervisors unanimously approved a resolution endorsing a proposed . Once constructed, the park would have been in Lower Hackett Park in Easton. But that plan never took off.

Prior to that, plans called for a modular facility to be temporarily built at the until the completion of the 52-acre park at Newlins and Richmond roads, at a cost of $120,000 to $130,000. Those plans were shelved because of a lack of public input and concerns over how long the township would have to rent that temporary location.

“We’ve been talking about this for four years,” said Supervisor David Billings. “It’s time we did something.”

A skate park is also seen as a solution to damage caused by skateboarders using public property as impromptu parks.

“We’ve spent a lot of money in repairing things,” has said earlier. “It’s a vicious cycle and we need to figure out a solution. The township has to come up with something, or this is not going to end.”

Parks and Recreation Director said there are two possible locations on the grounds of the community center, both near the new amphitheater.

“I am vehemently opposed to spending recreation money without a plan,” Chairman Eric Chuss said. “It’s management 101: You don’t spend money without a plan.”

Sulzbach is expected to present a plan with approximate costs at the May 3 supervisors meeting.
