Easton Area Teachers Union Leader Discusses Cuts

The Easton Area teachers union president expresses frustration over the latest wave of staff cuts, including 17 middle school teachers.

While the Easton Area School Board has detailed the teacher position cuts at Easton Area Middle School, the district has yet to name names.

Meanwhile, in a story in the Easton Express-Times, teachers union president Jena Brodhead has expressed frustration over the latest round of cuts.

Brodhead stated that the teachers union worked with the school board over the past few years on a salary freeze and other concessions.

At Tuesday night's special meeting, Brodhead expressed bewilderment at the board's decision to and an assistant principal position from Easton Area Middle School.

The board's agenda had listed personnel, but attendees only saw on a handout along with the agenda listing the districtwide.

The school board's quick action at the public meeting to slash staff, even though there was an executive session of two hours and 30 minutes, still seemed to catch some audience members by surprise.

Especially since the district had shaved nearly 50 teaching positions two months earlier.
