Easton Cyber School to Open Next Month

District officials to host meetings to prepare Easton parents for cyber classes.

The Easton Area School District is ready to launch its first cyber school.

The Easton Area School District Cyber School will hold its first classes Jan. 28. To help get parents ready, the district will hold two informational meetings for them:

  • Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Easton Area High School library.
  • Wednesday, Jan. 16, also at 6:30 p.m. at the library.

The program will allow students to take cyber classes taught by district teachers through a company from Pittsburgh called VLN Partners. It will allow fourth- to 12th-grade students to take a mixture of cyber classes and regular courses at district schools.

District officials have said the move would allow them to save money on cyber education. Under the old system, the district paid $10,000 per student who take cyber classes outside the district. With VLN, the district will pay half that amount, as well as a $16,000 onetime signup fee.

This won't work for subjects for which the student has to develop hands on skills, like laboratory work in chemistry or vocational studies.

True, But that is why the article said that there would be a mix of cyber and regular classes. Hopefully all of the students will be properly supervised by a parent. If they are, then this is a great thing for the students.
