Five Things to Know About EAHS Football

Rovers get set to kick off 2011 season Friday.

The Easton Area High School Red Rovers kick off their 2011 football season at 7pm Friday. So Patch has put together a list of five things to know about the upcoming season.

  • Coach Steve Shiffert enters his 19th year with an overall record of 156-69-1. Last year, the Red Rovers went 12-3 overall and 8-1 in the division, winning the District 11 Class 4A title over Whitehall. The Red Rovers lost to La Salle in the PIAA 4A quarterfinals.
  • The team's 768 wins during 117 years of high school football rank second in Pennsylvania and ninth in the nation. TheRovers have won District XI championships in 199O, 1991, 1993, 2003, 2004, 2009 and 2010.
  • The 2011 Rovers are led by the following seniors: QB/S Ian Hayden, RB/CB Chevick Graham, TE/OLB Chris Jackson, FL/CB Jared Powell, TE/DE Skylar VanDyke, RB/CB James Middleton, RB/OLB Jeremy Swick, OL/DL Shaq Hutchings and RB/DB Kevin Griffin.
  • This season should be another strong one for the Rovers with players from the undefeated JV team replacing last year's departed seniors. The Rovers should contend for a Districts 2-4-11 4A playoff berth and could push for the league title.
  • The Rovers will play its annual Thanksgiving Day game against Phillipsburg on Thursday, Nov. 24, at Lafayette College's Fisher Field at Fisher Stadium at 10:30am. It's one of the longest rivalries in high school football, with this matchup being the 105th meeting. This game has been televised on ESPN a couple of times.
