Should Easton School Bus Drivers Give Out Candy?

Easton Area School District policy forbids drivers from giving food to kids.

It's not every meeting that someone shows up at an Easton Area School Board meeting and gives school officials candy.

Still, the board's December 5 meeting featured bus drivers handing out candy canes to the board and some school administrators.

This had less to do with the holidays than it did with district bus drivers protesting a policy that keeps them from giving students candy.

The policy is there because the district can't screen every student for allergies, school officials told the Express-Times last month.

But the drivers say that's part of their job.

"We do know who is and who is not allergic," bus driver Helen Jones told the board. "All we’re asking is let these kids be kids.”

Yes. They should be able to give a treat. Its bad enough the schools are taking childhood away.

I agree with Kerry in that the schools have become way too strict with what can and can;t be allowed, and yes the bus driver should be able to give out candy.

It is not the schools, it is the state. According to laws in many states schools are not allowed to give out candy as a reward. Anything given out must be sugar free and fat free. If the candy is part of a lesson, like graphing with M&M's, then the kids can eat them when done.

I have a small child with a serious peanut and tree nut allergy. I would never want the bus driver handing out candy to my child. It could be a matter of life or death for some children. If you want to give your kid candy or candy canes, give it to them yourself.
