Should Easton School Bus Drivers Give Out Candy?

Easton Area School District policy forbids drivers from giving food to kids.

It's not every meeting that someone shows up at an Easton Area School Board meeting and gives school officials candy.

Still, the board's December 5 meeting featured bus drivers handing out candy canes to the board and some school administrators.

This had less to do with the holidays than it did with district bus drivers protesting a policy that keeps them from giving students candy.

The policy is there because the district can't screen every student for allergies, school officials told the Express-Times last month.

But the drivers say that's part of their job.

"We do know who is and who is not allergic," bus driver Helen Jones told the board. "All we’re asking is let these kids be kids.”
