The Great 'Going to School' Debate Continues

It seems these days like children in the Easton Area School District don't go to school that much.

Well, at least it seems that way.

On Friday, students had another in-service day—for the second straight Friday—and another off-day comes with the Presidents Day holiday Monday.

Then throw in a two-hour delayed opening and the school week comes up rather short.

Throw in some sick days of late since the new year started for my son...and it all adds up.

Yeah, we all know that children are required by state law to go to school 180 days a year and EASD students may have to make up some days at the end for Hurricane Sandy.

But still.

With my son home Friday, I posted on the Palmer/Forks Facebook page that it was an in-service day and with the holiday Monday, it seemed like kids never go to school.

I've broached the topic before. Friday, though, it caused quite a debate among our page's followers. You can read some of those posts here.

Some parents felt that kids in the EASD are really going to school less than those in other districts.

But a Forks Township father pointed out that everyone goes to school the same amount of days, but it may not seem so cause every district operates on a different schedule.

For example, students in Wilson have their last day of school on June 5, one parent said, pointing out that schools in Easton have their last day on June 16.

And who knows yet how the Hurricane Sandy days will be calculated.

Some took the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as a makeup while others reworked an in-service day.

But the conversation between parents was great. It was nice seeing the interaction and discussion among people. It's just amazing what social media can do to get people involved.
