New Easton Boys Basketball Coach Hired

Benjamin Childs replaces former Rover boys basketball coach Jim Hutnik.

Easton Area High School's varsity boys basketball team has a new head coach.

The Easton Area School Board voted Tuesday night to hire Benjamin Childs, a teacher and assistant coach, to lead the boys team.

He replaces Jim Hutnik, who resigned in August after eight years with the team.

The district's other candidate had been fellow coach Eric Jacobs.

Ryan DeLong, who identified himself as an Easton graduate now living in Chicago but looking to return to Easton, questioned the district's choice of Childs over Jacobs. He suggested Childs had an unfair advantage, as a "drinking buddy" of members of the district athletic department.

Superintendent John Reinhart said DeLong's assertion was unfair, but declined to outline the district's reasons for choosing one candidate over another.

"I wouldn’t want any potential candidates to think any remarks they give us are going to be subject to public debate," Reinhart said.

Childs' salary will be $10,147.
