This Week in Eagles Camp: Offense Roster Battles

Editor's Note: This is a weekly report every Friday about the Philadelphia Eagles in training camp at Lehigh University.

As August heats up, the past few weeks of training at for the start to mean something.

The players have tested their skills against each other. Now they will battle against opponents in four pre-season games, the first which kicked off against the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday night (the Eagles won, 24-23).

Camp has been relatively quiet this week with the Garrett. Full practices were held Sunday and Monday, but the team took the day off to attend .

After a walk-through Wednesday morning, the game Thursday and another day off Friday, camp is beginning to wind down.

So now the real battles begin: The battles for a spot on the roster.

This year, there are many. We'll look at the offense this week, and the defense next week.

Sure, we all know that Michael Vick will be at quarterback, LeSean McCoy at running back, Brent Celek at tight end and Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson at wideouts. Those are givens.

Lock up Jason Kelce at center and Todd Herremans, Danny Watkins, Evan Mathis and Demetress Bell replacing the injured Jason Peters as that's the offensive line.

Here are some of the offense battles you may see all pre-season.

Quarterback -- While Mike Kafka may have won the backup job, the battle for third QB is between rookie Nick Foles and veteran Trent Edwards. Foles has looked sharp.

Running Back -- It looks like Dion Lewis should back up McCoy. Who will emerge from rookies Chris Polk and Bryce Brown? Also, will the team keep a fullback or go with Polk and Brown. If so, fullback Stanley Havili may find his way on the practice squad.

Wide Receiver -- Behind Jackson and Maclin, there's steady Jason Avant. Fourth wideout Riley Cooper is out for a while with an injury. So that opens the door for rookie Marvin McNutt, who seems to be a lock, and rookie Damaris Johnson. But don't count out the versatile Chad Hall. He seems to find his way onto the roster every year.

Tight End -- Celek is one of the best in the business. Backup Clay Harbor, though, has to hold off a strong challenge from Penn Stater Brett Brackett. The team could keep three tight ends so we'll see.

Offensive Line -- Veterans Mike Gibson and King Dunlap can play several positions. Dallas Reynolds and Julian Vandervelde are also in the mix. Rookies Dennis Kelly and Brandon Washington could also make their case.

Next week, we'll look at the roster battles on defense.

Camp breaks up at Lehigh University on Wednesday, when the team heads to the Novacare complex in Philadelphia for future practices.

Saturday, Aug. 11 -- 8:15 a.m. walk-thru and 2:35 p.m. practice.

Sunday, Aug. 12 -- 8:15 a.m. walk-thru and 2:35 p.m. practice.

Monday, Aug. 13 -- 8:15 a.m. walk-thru and 2:35 p.m. practice.

Tuesday, Aug. 14 -- Fan Appreciation Day. 8:15 a.m. walk-thru and 2:35 p.m. practice.
