Sounds of Summer Music to Forks' Ears

Debut of summer concert series at new amphitheater Wednesday night draws more than 100 Forks Township residents.

They had built it, but would they come?

Forks Township unveiled its new Wednesday night with a summer concert series that turned out to be a field of dreams for officials, as a field full of 100 residents showed up to hear some free music.

"I think this is great," said. "Our goal is to use this amphitheater to provide some great entertainment."

That goal started out well as She Said Sunday, an award-winning rock 'n' roll cover band from the Lehigh Valley, got the joint jumping with its version of "Centerfold" by the J. Geils Band.

Marie McLean couldn't wait to bring her family to the concert, the first of five throughout the summer.

She spread out a red blanket and got comfortable with her 4-year-old daughter Samantha as her husband and son wandered the grounds.

"I think this is awesome," she said. "This is a family thing to do on weeknights. It's such a great way to bring the community together."

Andrea Slattery, another Forks resident, said she came out to support the arts.

Merchants Bank was supporting the whole series, paying $6,000 in sponsorship fees.

"This is what our bank is all about," said Sandee Kennedy, a bank representative. "We're excited to be a part of this."

For Recreation Director Rachel Sulzbach, all her planning finally came to fruition.

"I just hope with all the hard work people come out and enjoy the concerts and the movies," she said.
