Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered to .05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. Internationally, only a handful of countries, including Canada, the United States and England, have a BAC limit of .08 while most of the …

Man Drove with Expired License for Seven Years

Man charged by Forks Township police with DUI on New Year's Eve, arraigned Thursday.

A man charged by Forks Township police with driving under the influence on New Year’s Eve was found to have a driver’s license that expired almost seven years ago, court records say. Also, the man remained a John Doe during his arrest and time spent at the county DUI center, where he refused chemical testing. The man provided no identification and there was no record for the information he did provide, the records say. It wasn’t until police took him to county central booking, where they could perform a “live scan” on the John Doe, that they were able to identify him as Luis Manuel Lazu. A “live scan” captures fingerprints and palm prints electronically without the need for traditional ink and paper. It allows police to identify people and…

$1000 bail??? I would rather my taxpayer dollars be spent letting this parasite rot behind bars than on the street collecting welfare, food stamps, driving around drunk, stoned and most certainly-uninsured. Are we waiting for it to kill someone??   more ›

How Many Drinks Will Get You A DUI?

If you insist on driving after a few drinks on New Year's Eve, here's what you should know about how alcohol affects your system—and your criminal record.

Do you know how many drinks you can have before you're in danger of getting a drunken driving violation?  As we approach New Year's Eve, and all the celebrations that come with it, Patch is here to help you know when enough is enough. When police pull drivers over for suspected drunken driving, officers ask them to perform field sobriety tests and to take a breath test to measure Blood Alcohol Content. A BAC test measures the percentage of alcohol present in a person's bloodstream. Pennsylvania's legal limit is 0.08. According to the Virginia Tech Alcohol Abuse Prevention website, every 40 minutes, 0.01 percent of alcohol leaves your system.  Check out the chart in the media portion of this article to see what your limit is. And remember, …
