Another fire in Forks, a major marijuana bust, a dispute over a fireworks display and a contestant on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" highlight our big local stories this past week.
Forks Township had its second fire in less than two weeks when a house under construction went ablaze. Meanwhile, a Forks resident won $1,000 on a popular TV game show. That $1,000 could have helped pay a $5,000 business grant that Forks supervisors rejected, but they did approve spending $6,000 for the Community Days fireworks display. Here's the Week in Review: A Forks Township man was charged Friday morning after Palmer Township police executed a search warrant that revealed a large marijuana distribution operation at his home. A fire destroyed a home under construction in Forks Township Tuesday night. The home on Fox Run Road burned to the ground in a half hour. It costs $6,000 and is considered the biggest draw in Forks Township every…

Tensions spark as Forks Township Board of Supervisors debates over funding annual fireworks show.
It costs $6,000 and is considered the biggest draw in Forks Township every year. But the Forks Township Community Days fireworks display landed on the township's fiscal chopping block — due to the township's looming financial crisis — at a recent meeting and almost went up in flames. "I have a real problem when I see $6,000 for fireworks," Supervisor Bob Egolf said. "I think great, in 15 minutes to a half-hour, $6,000 goes up in smoke." "We have an $8 million budget. I'm extremely concerned hearing that we don't need to spend money except on the absolute bare essentials," Supervisors Chairman Erik Chuss said. "It's the biggest event in Forks Township. To say we're not going to give $6,000 for fireworks I think is a shame." While the …

Palmer Township officials couldn't be more pleased with how Palmer Township Community Days turned out. Thirty-year event even had best crowd ever one night.
What's the best word to describe this past Palmer Township Community Days? How about PERFECT. Palmer Township officials met Wednesday to hold a wrap-up meeting of the four-day festival. And no one could have possibly asked for a better outcome than what took place on the 30th anniversary of the event. "There were all good points," organizer Diane Grube said. "It was very successful. The food was great, the people were amazing, the crowds were overwhelming." The event started on Aug. 15 with Movie Night and then kicked into high gear on Thursday with an appearance by the Phillie Phanatic and on Saturday with the fireworks show. And based on the crowd Saturday night, which township officials said was the most ever in Palmer Days' history, …

The following information comes courtesy of the Pennsylvania State Police. Here are some FAQs regarding fireworks just in time for July 4th. Q: Can I use fireworks in Pennsylvania? A: State law prohibits the use of Consumer and Display Fireworks in Pennsylvania without a permit. Items defined as “ground and hand-held sparkling devices," “novelties” and “toy caps” in American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) Standard 87-1 are not currently regulated by State Law; therefore, their sale and use are permissible. These “non-fireworks” are the only types allowed to be sold from tents, stands, convenience stores, retail establishments and other various outlets not licensed by the Department of Agriculture. Q: Can I buy regular fireworks – not …

Some of us don't really take the Fourth of July as seriously as we should.
It's become a family tradition. Each year, we head to Old Navy and buy T-shirts symbolizing the Fourth of July. Each year, there's a different color and a logo of the American flag with the year listed on it. Time is ticking away on this tradition, days away actually, and we have yet to get our T-shirts for this year. That would be a shame too since I have T-shirts like this dating back more than a decade. So another Fourth of July is upon us and it doesn't really have the same old ring to it. Things just don't seem that patriotic. I'm not sure why. Yet maybe I really do know why. People take their freedom for granted. It's evident in most of our communities these days. The Fourth represents a day off from work and a great chance to go …

Allentown resident left two kids in car as he tried to steal fireworks from Giant in Palmer Township, court records say.
An Allentown man left two young children in his illegally parked car as he tried to steal fireworks from the Giant supermarket in Palmer Township Saturday afternoon, according to court records. Kiet Minh Tran, 43, of 446 Hanover Ave., formerly of Palmer Township, is facing charges brought by Palmer of felony retail theft; two counts of endangering the welfare of children, also a felony, and a lesser charge of leaving an unattended child in a motor vehicle. Tran had been convicted of shoplifting at the same supermarket on three previous occasions, according to the arrest affidavit. This time, Tran was caught in the act by Michael Eddinger, a Giant loss prevention officer, the affidavit says. According to the affidavit:
