Met-Ed says Easton will have power restored by Monday at the latest.
Brandy Cameron has an 8-year-old daughter, a 7-week-old baby, and her eye on Nov. 2, the day her lights might come back on. "They said Friday at the latest, so..." There wasn't an end to that sentence, just a despairing sigh. It was Wednesday afternoon, two days since Hurricane Sandy knocked her power out, and she and her daughters were at the Salvation Army in Easton to get warm. It had gotten to the point, Cameron said, that the inside of their home in Wilson was just as cold as the outside. "It's been terrible," she said, guarding a stroller with baby Deena swaddled inside. "My sister's been trying to get us to come to Mississippi, but I have no way of getting down there." Cameron was among the thousands of Met-Ed customers in the …

Hurricane Sandy left Palmer and Forks Townships with lots of power outages, downed trees and even a flipped airplane.
Hurricane Sandy has come and gone. But it's devastation is still evident in Palmer and Forks Township. As crews worked to restore power Tuesday to residents who lost it, the signs of Sandy were everywhere: from the rising Bushkill Creek, to downed trees in Palmer Township to the Giant Food Store in Forks Township running on a generator to a plane flipped over at the Braden Airpark. To submit your own photos, upload them on our Pics and Clips and we may feature them.

At a 9 a.m. press conference Tuesday, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett said the worst of Hurricane Sandy is over, but there are 1.3 million without power and two deaths.
“You could say we dodged a bullet,” said Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett at a 9 a.m. press conference. “We don’t have a shore line, so New Jersey and New York got it worse.” However, as of this morning, there are 1.3 million homes without power around Southeastern Pennsylvania after Hurricane Sandy hit land last night. "If you're one of those without power," Corbett said, "you probably don't feel like you dodged a bullet." State officials urge patience. All utility companies have brought in crews from other states to get the grid up and running. And there are nearly 700 active emergency shelters in operation now. Corbett also said two people were killed in Pennsylvania Monday — an 8-year-old boy in Susquehanna County and a 62-year-old …

As Hurricane Sandy prepares to hit Palmer and Forks, I ponder storms past.
Hurricane David. It was probably the first hurricane I remember. As Hurricane Sandy hits the Lehigh Valley, I decided to write about hurricanes past. The first I really remember was Hurricane David. Probably around 1979-1980. I had just started middle school in Morris County, N.J., and the storm hit us at night. Back then, you never got these major bulletins about a storm's arrival and there was no Internet. I was sleeping when I heard this crash and looked at a live fiery wire that was bursting outside my bedroom window. Well, I bolted from the room. The storm had hit some big trees in front of our Rockaway Township house, taking down the power lines and both cars parked in the driveway. We had no school. But we also had no power and no …

With Hurricane Sandy predicted to hit us hard today, losing power is a threat. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service prepared a fact sheet for keeping food safe during an emergency, including losing power. The USDA says to "keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature." But, the refrigerator will only keep food safely cold for about four hours if unopened during a power outage, according to the USDA. A full freezer will hold the temperature for about 48 hours if full (24 hours if half full). The USDA emphasizes "never to taste food to determine its safety" and says that you should "evaluate each item separately." Generally, if the temperature in the thermometer in the freezer …
