Gas Prices Drop for the Second Week

Find the cheapest gas in Palmer and Forks Townships.

The national average for a gallon of gas has dropped 9 cents to begin March, which is opposite of what motorists are used to, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report. The price increased by 6 cents last year at this time and by 17 cents in 2011. In the Lehigh Valley, the average price of self-serve gasoline is $3.685 per gallon, 4.2 cents lower than a week ago, 2.5 cents lower than a month ago and 5.9 cents lower than a year ago. This was the second week in a row to see a decline. It is too soon to say whether retail prices have peaked for the spring, because there is still refinery maintenance to be completed, and much of the country must still transition to summer-blend gasoline, the report states. Forks Police Holding Medication Drop-Off

Forks Township police will hold drop-off program at Giant on April 27.

The Forks Township Police Department will conduct a prescription drug drop-off program at Giant Food Store on Town Center Boulevard on April 27. Police ask that you bring your expired or unwanted medication for proper disposal. The site will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. near the pharmacy. The program is done in cooperation with the DEA's National Take Back Initiative and takes place annually.

Giant in Palmer Township Remodeled

Giant Food Stores announces makeover for Palmer Township and Bethlehem locations.

The Giant Food Store in Palmer Township looks a litte fresher. Giant Food Stores has completed major remodels of its stores at 801 S. 25th Street in Palmer and 2100 W. Union Boulevard in Bethlehem. The stores underwent three-month remodels to provide customers with an expanded product selection and features for a more convenient shopping experience. “By remodeling our [Palmer Township/Easton] and Bethlehem stores we are able to provide our customers with new state-of-the-art shopping amenities and an enhanced variety of product selection to meet their needs,” said Rob Augustine, district director. Forks/Palmer Stores Selling Out of Twinkies

Local stores are selling out of Hostess products and a box of Twinkies is going for $200,000 on eBay. There's even a petition to 'Nationalize the Twinkie' industry. Hostess announced Friday it will close.

The same day Hostess Brand Inc. announced it will close, someone came in and bought all the Twinkies from the Village West Giant Food Store in South Whitehall. That scene is repeating itself at Giant Food Stores and Weis Markets in Palmer and Forks townships as people buy up all the sweet treats. Hostess Brand Inc. announced Friday it filed a motion in U.S. Bankruptcy Court asking permission to close and sell assets - including its iconic brands and facilities.  Giant Store Manager Jeff Pierpoint said people came in after the announcement and "bought all the Twinkies." Pedestrian Struck in Palmer Township

Man suffers head injury after being struck on 25th Street Thursday afternoon.

A man suffered a head injury after being struck by a vehicle in Palmer Township Thursday night, police said. Jeffrey Jacques was being treated at St. Luke's University Hospital- Fountain Hill after he was injured during the accident on S. 25th Street near the Giant Food Store. Palmer police responded just before 7 p.m. Thursday to a report of a pedestrain struck in the 800 block of S. 25th Street, Det. Jim Alercia said. Witnesses told police that Jacques, listed with an unknown address, was standing in the middle of the road and appeared to be trying to cross when he was struck. Police said the driver, Eric Vokes of Easton, told police he was traveling north on 25th Street when he merged into the left lane to turn into a shopping complex. …

Risk of salmonella contamination prompts Giant Food Stores to remove Talenti Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Gelato from its shelves.

Giant Food Stores announced Monday that it removed from sale Talenti Chocolate Peanut Butter Gelato, following a recall due to possible salmonella contamination in the peanut butter. Giant has locations in Palmer and Forks townships. The following product is included in this recall: No illnesses have been reported to date. Customers who have purchased the product should discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to Giant for a full refund. Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Giant has recalled Daniella mangos due to a possible health risk from salmonella contamination.

Following a voluntary recall by Splendid Products, Giant Food Stores has removed Daniella mangos from its shelves due to a possible health risk from salmonella contamination. The following product, purchased between July 12 and Aug. 24, 2012 is included in this recall: There have been reports of illness associated with consumption of this product in Canada. The product should be thrown away or brought to any Giant. A full refund is available with a receipt of purchase. Giant has locations in Forks and Palmer townships.
