'Lucky' Hess Station Sells 3 Winning Powerball Tickets

What's up with the Hess gas station on Route 309 in Orefield? It's sold three winning lottery tickets with large jackpots, in February, March and April.

What are the chances Wednesday's winning $60 million Powerball ticket will be sold at the Hess station on Route 309 in Orefield? About the same infinitesimal odds the same Hess gas station had in selling three winning lottery tickets with huge jackpots in the last three months. The long odds not only didn't deter customers from buying lottery tickets Monday, the rash of oddball wins actually attracted customers, such as Dawayne Brown, 23, of Orefield. "This is the first time I've bought a Powerball ticket," said Brown, who rushed out to buy a ticket after a co-worker at KidsPeace told him someone bought a lottery ticket worth $2 million at the lucky Hess station. The Hess station at 3640 Route 309 sold a winning Powerball ticket worth $2 …

Privatize Pa. Lottery? Voters Say No

Could privatizing the lottery mean fewer people will play?

Pennsylvanians do not want their lottery to be privatized, as Gov. Tom Corbett is proposing, according to a new Franklin & Marshall College Poll. The poll found that 47 percent of those polled strongly opposed the privatization with 17 somewhat opposing it. Only 7 percent were strongly in favor with 11 percent being somewhat in favor of the move. Most people polled, 75 percent, said they would play the lottery about the same amount as they do now if it were privatized, but a not insignificant number of people, 19 said they would play less frequently. The Franklin & Marshall College Poll interviewed 622 Pennsylvania voters between January 29 and February 3. The margin of error is reported as plus or minus 3.9 percentage points. A recent …

Anyone who wants to support privitazation of the lottery is crazy. Outsourcing Pennsylvania jobs to a foreign company is un-American. Camelot will run away the second it's time to pay the fiddler.   more ›

A Bad Gamble: Pa. Lottery Privatization

Government and government-created entities like the Pa. Lottery must become entrepreneurs, according to political expert G. Terry Madonna

By G. Terry Madonna & Michael L.Young “A roll of the dice” one would-be wit called it. Others have described it in considerably less family friendly terms. But, however, described, it’s described a lot. Indeed, it’s been widely reported nationally as well as across Pennsylvania. The Corbett administration intends to turn management of the Pennsylvania lottery over to the British firm, Camelot Global Services. “Privatization” of the operation of the state lottery is about to become a fact, subject to legal reviews by the attorney general,  the state treasurer and a court challenge by AFSCME, the union representing lottery employees. Thank you for the opportunity to respond further. The fact is the family of Multi-Drawing lotteries was proposed to all the state lotteries. I believe that if only a few states ran these lotteries that it would help all of America. No other lotteries will do what mine can do; breaking the jackpots down and distributing the funds to many winners on a weekly basis. By doing this you create an …   more ›

British Company Set To Run Pa. Lottery

A British company poised to manage the Pennsylvania Lottery plans to boost the bottom line by getting more people to play lottery games.

By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent HARRISBURG — A British company poised to manage the Pennsylvania Lottery plans to boost the bottom line by getting more people to play lottery games. But some lawmakers are skeptical. Senate Finance Committee Minority Chairman Sen. John Blake, D-Lackawanna, said he still has reservations about the Corbett administration’s pursuit of a private management agreement with Camelot Global Services, even after a four-hour hearing Monday. The process was done without legislative oversight, and that worries Blake. “This is a scale of a decision that probably should’ve been, I would’ve preferred and I think the leadership in my caucus and many members in my caucus would’ve preferred, was something that was put to …

PA Lottery Gets Just 1 Bid for Private Management

A British company is the only bidder that has offered to manage the Pennsylvania Lottery

By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania’s pursuit of privatizing management of the state lottery yielded only one interested party. The state received a bid from Camelot Global Services, which runs the National Lottery in the United Kingdom. Camelot estimates it would bring annual profit commitment of $12.1 billion in the first 10 years. Projections for a 20-year period, assuming a 27 percent mandated rate of return, would yield more than $34 billion in profits, according to the official bid tabulation. Department of Revenue press secretary Elizabeth Brassell said Wednesday the state had three qualified bidders in May. But two dropped out since then. One was interested in pursuing other commercial opportunities. The …
