Week in Review

School Budget Blues, Foot Chase, New Sheetz Top Local News

The Easton Area School Board passed another tax hike, but also appointed an interim schools superintendent in our Week in Review.

It was a week of the good, the bad and the ugly. For Palmer and Forks residents, the good is that the Easton Area School Board appointed an interim schools chief. The bad is that it also approved another tax hike. And the ugly is that more staffing layoffs are coming down the pike. In Palmer, the good was that a new Sheetz could open before Thanksgiving. The bad was a foot chase in the Palmer Park Mall that injured a police officer. And the ugly was the fact that Forks Township is still putting up with a "shoddy" amphitheater. Here is our Week in Review: Construction of a Sheetz gas station/convenience store is under way in Palmer Township. School board approves 1.7 percent tax increase. Job cuts ahead for district employees. Forks …

$13,000 in Jewelry Purchased with Stolen Identity, Police Say

Man accused in Palmer Park Mall identity theft is also accused of buying more than $13,000 in jewelry with a stolen identity from a Lehigh Valley Mall store, court records say.

A Philadelphia man already accused in an identity theft case at Palmer Park Mall that caused an officer to break his big toe during a foot chase faces additional charges of allegedly buying more than $13,000 in jewelry with a stolen identity. The Palmer mall chase Tuesday night was prompted by calls from Freeman Jewelers that Geffrey Desir, 27, was trying to buy a “Gent’s Ring” valued at almost $7,500 with a stolen credit card and identification, court records say. Additional charges against Desir were filed Thursday. They detail how he allegedly bought more than $13,000 in jewelry, apparently from Littman Jewelers, also using a stolen identity. Littman has a store in Palmer mall, but Desir apparently bought the Littman items at the Lehigh…

Police Officer Breaks Toe Chasing Man at Palmer Park Mall

Palmer Township police officers chase a man on foot in Palmer Park Mall Tuesday night, according to court records.

A Philadelphia man is facing multiple charges including aggravated assault on two police officers and resisting arrest after a foot chase at Palmer Park Mall resulted in one policeman breaking his big toe, according to court papers. Palmer Township Police Sgt. Glenn Sipel used a Taser to apprehend Geffrey Desir, 27, near a construction dumpster outside the mall on Tuesday night, police said. Desir ran into Sipel, whose right big toe was broken, and kept going before the Taser was fired and knocked the suspect to the ground, police said. Police were called to the mall at about 8:20 p.m. by Freeman Jewelers, whose employees reported that a man was trying to make a purchase with a stolen credit card and identification, according to an arrest …

I am sure Alercia had the same questions...like, "maam, how do you come about being in the car, if you did not know the guy?" or, "what were you doing in the car, before you were "pushed" out?", or "what started the incident?"...I am sorry, people just don't push people out of their cars for no reason...My guess is, she didn't tell them, or concocted some elaborate story...Or maybe they did not …   more ›

Todd R. Hoadley, 43, of Upper Nazareth, is charged with trying to steal about $242 in clothes from Boscov's at the Palmer Park Mall.

Police arrived at a Palmer Park Mall entrance Saturday night and found a man on the ground—held down by loss-prevention officials from Boscov’s. The man, Todd R. Hoadley, 43, of Upper Nazareth Township, allegedly tried to steal about $242 in clothes—mostly summer wear—and had been helped by his girlfriend, who had gotten away, according to the loss-prevention officials and 911 dispatchers. The Boscov’s loss-prevention officials said Hoadley and his girlfriend were taking clothing and putting it into an “aerie” bag, according to a criminal complaint filed by Palmer Officer Kenneth McPherson. The officials stopped Hoadley outside the mall around 8:15 p.m. and held him down by the entrance to the mall’s pet store. They said his girlfriend, …

Week in Review

Sinking Roads, Billboard Blues, Stolen Gold Top Local News

Palmer Township battles sinkholes and billboards, thieves tried to swipe gold chains and cologne and Larry Holmes' home goes on the market was all in the week that was.

First there was a report of a water main break. Then that turned into two sinkholes. And those sinkholes shut a key Palmer Township road. While Palmer Township officials fought what they deem as an illegal digital billboard, work crews were trying to fill the sinkholes on Northwood Avenue. Meanwhile, over at the Palmer Park Mall, thieves were trying to swipe gold chains and some cologne. And while Palmer provided some good news that work on its bike path is progressing, two former officials of a township company pleaded guilty to defrauding schools. If that wasn't enough, Palmer Township's celebrity, boxing legend Larry Holmes, has put up his house for sale. Two sinkholes open up along Northwood Avenue in Palmer Township Thursday afternoon…

New Jersey man charged with allegedly stealing three gold chains from Palmer Park Mall jewelry store.

Palmer Township police have made an arrest in a February 2012 robbery of a Palmer Park Mall jewelry store, and they appear to have found their man—in a New Jersey prison with an extensive criminal record. Brad Eric Maxwell, 39, was sentenced in November to three years in a New Jersey state prison for forging checks from a Warren County church and stealing from two county stores, according to a published report. The Belvidere resident, who said at the November sentencing that he has a drug addiction, previously had been convicted in Warren County of plotting to kill an acquaintance. And in a previous Northampton County case, he pleaded guilty to stealing an 80-year-old woman’s purse in downtown Easton. On Wednesday, Maxwell was arraigned in…

Man Nabbed Trying to Swipe Cologne from Boscov's, Police Say

An Easton man with prior retail theft convictions faces more serious charges after alleged Palmer Park Mall theft.

An Easton man was charged with felony retail theft after he was allegedly caught trying to steal two cologne gift sets from the Boscov’s department store in the Palmer Park Mall. Paul Harold Esposito, 59, of 33 N. Delaware Drive, is facing a felony charge because he had two prior convictions for retail theft, though the most recent was 18 years ago, according to court papers. According to the arrest affidavit, Esposito took an Yves Saint Laurent cologne gift set, valued at $88, and a Polo cologne gift set, valued at $84, during a trip to the store Friday afternoon. Boscov’s loss prevention staff told Palmer Township police that Esposito brought the gift sets to a men’s fitting room and then concealed them under his coat before trying to …
