School Budget Blues, Foot Chase, New Sheetz Top Local News

The Easton Area School Board passed another tax hike, but also appointed an interim schools superintendent in our Week in Review.

It was a week of the good, the bad and the ugly. For Palmer and Forks residents, the good is that the Easton Area School Board appointed an interim schools chief. The bad is that it also approved another tax hike. And the ugly is that more staffing layoffs are coming down the pike. In Palmer, the good was that a new Sheetz could open before Thanksgiving. The bad was a foot chase in the Palmer Park Mall that injured a police officer. And the ugly was the fact that Forks Township is still putting up with a "shoddy" amphitheater. Sinkholes, Bright Billboards, Trash Talk Top Local News

The sinkholes returned, a digital billboard may now be brighter and trash changes all littered the landscape in Palmer-Forks this past week.

For Palmer Township residents, this past week was a tough one to swallow. Residents were getting used to a new trash collection system and others were complaining that problems with the controversial digital billboard on Route 22 have returned. So did a sinkhole, shutting Northwood Avenue for a few days and topping out Week in Review: Palmer Township residents go before Board of Supervisors to complain that Route 22 digital billboard is still too bright. Safety concerns raised as sinkholes open up once again on Northwood Avenue. Upgrades to Easton school buildings will cost nearly three times more than expected. Two Forks Township runners escaped injury in the Boston Marathon. Meanwhile, the school district lost a superintendent candidate, but saved its music program.

They made it through the race and made it out alive. Two Forks Township runners escaped injury in the Boston Marathon attacks. Meanwhile, Forks officials tried to explain police program cuts. One cut that wasn't made was the music program in the Easton Area School District, which did have the second of two schools superintendents drop out. Here's the Week in Review: Two Forks Township women had just completed the Boston Marathon Monday when the bombs exploded. They escaped injury. The Easton Area School District faces more staff cuts and tax hikes while a superintendent candidate pulls out of contention.

The billboard battles rages on in Palmer Township. Palmer Township took action this week against the developer of the controversial Route 22 digital billboard, filing an injunction Friday to get code violations up to snuff. Meanwhile, the Easton Area School Board faces a difficult decision Tuesday: Choosing how many staffers will lose their jobs and how large of a tax hike it will pass on to taxpayers. Also, one of two candidates to replace the district's schools superintendent announced that he was pulling out of contention. The Week in Review that closes March features some school stories including the search for a new superintendent, the use of Smarties and a cello donation.

Another week has come and gone and this one closes out the month of March with a heavy emphasis on school stories. And if you "feel the earth move under my feet," that's probably a sign of a sinkhole in Forks Township. Veteran Palmer Township police officer Susan Siegfried is no longer on the force, Chief Larry Palmer said Tuesday. Easton Area School Board expected to make selection of new schools superintendent next month. Public Works Director Mark Roberts says sinkhole season takes place in Forks Township when ground begins to thaw. Kids in Easton are apparently snorting and smoking crushed up candy, the middle school principal says. The Week That Was featured calls for beefing up security in the Easton Area School District to Shawnee Elementary teachers cooking up a meal for charity. A new subs spot opened as the first eatery in the Park Plaza at Sullivan Trail while residents continued to question a new digital billboard put up along Route 22 in Palmer Township. Meanwhile, a Palmer woman was charged in a recent methadone house explosion and Palmer police were even victimized in a crime. Another fire in Forks, a major marijuana bust, a dispute over a fireworks display and a contestant on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" highlight our big local stories this past week.

Forks Township had its second fire in less than two weeks when a house under construction went ablaze. Meanwhile, a Forks resident won $1,000 on a popular TV game show.
