Mom Who Shot Burglar is New Face of Gun Rights

Gun rights activists are embracing a young mother who shot a burglar in her home

A young mother protected her home and children by shooting a burglar five times, leaving him in critical condition. The Georgia woman took her children and hid in an attic space, but the intruder found them, according to Loganville Patch. Melinda Herman has now become a new face of gun rights amid the dramatic story of her defending herself and two children with a six-shot revolver. Vice President Joe Biden will present gun control recommendations on Tuesday as some lawmakers push for a renewed assault weapons ban in the wake of the Newtown school shooting a month ago in Connecticut. Tell Us: Should Assault Weapons Be Banned?

Some politicians are suggesting that it's time to ban assault weapons in the United States in the wake of Friday's Newtown school shooting.

Nineteen types of assault weapons — semi-automatic or fully automatic guns with the capacity to shoot many bullets in a short period of time — were banned in the United States from 1994 to 2004. In 2004, the ban expired and neither President Bush nor Congress acted to renew it. Some politicians are calling for new laws that would ban the type of high-capacity weapons used by the gunman to kill 20 children and six adults in an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. on Friday. Outgoing Sen. Joe Lieberman told the Associated Press Sunday that the U.S. should ban military-style assault weapons. Sen.
