Roof work is slated for Easton Area High School, along with masonry work at Paxinosa Elementary this summer.
The third phase of work to replace the 30-plus-year-old roof at Easton Area High School will begin this summer. Easton Area Schools Business Administrator Michael Simonetta announced that phase three of the project for asbestos abatement on the roof has been awarded to Sergeant Enterprises, which came in with a low bid of $10,224. The roof work started in 2011 with the first phase replacing 50,000 square feet. The entire 110,000-square-foot roof replacement project is expected to cost $1.4 million. The project is expected to replace the roof and flashing, demolish two abandoned chimneys and include other repairs. Replacement of the roof has been in the works since 2010. Easton Area High School will sell its used football jerseys Wednesday.
Want to own a piece of Easton sports history? You'll get your chance on Wednesday when Easton Area High School sells its used football jerseys. The sale runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the school equipment room. Jerseys sell for $25 a piece, or $40 for a set of home/away jerseys.

Easton Area High School production of 1950s musical begins Friday night.
The Music Man takes the stage at Easton Area High School this weekend. The show—which premiered in 1957—tells the story of Professor Harold Hill, a con artist trying to sell a small Iowa town on starting a boys' band. The show stars students Corey Lopes as Hill and Nina Attinello as Marian. Both were among Easton's Freddy Award nominees for last year's production Damn Yankees, with Attinello taking home the award for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. Tickets are $10, and are available Wednesday and Thursday night at the school from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Showtimes are 7 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Easton Area High School students test their science prowess at Northampton Community College's main campus in Bethlehem on Friday.
Easton Area High School students will join students from 14 other area high schools in competing in the 2013 Science Olympics to be held on Northampton Community College’s main campus in Bethlehem on Friday. There will be plenty of action as students put the laws of nature and physics to work in events like the electric launch glider and "boomilever" in the Spartan Center from 9:10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., according to a press release by NCC. The high schools registered to compete are: Northampton Community College's main campus is located at 3835 Green Pond Road in Bethlehem.

Easton students will keep moving for 12 hours straight to raise money for pediatric cancer patients.
If you know someone who goes to Penn State, you've probably heard about "Thon," the university's annual two-day dance marathon that's the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. Last year, it raised more than $10 million for the Four Diamonds Fund, which helps pediatric cancer patients and their families. At Easton Area High School, the National Honor Society is planning something similar, although on a smaller scale. Next weekend at the high school, the group will hold a 12-hour "mini-thon," starting at Friday at 8 p.m. and running until Saturday at 8 a.m. "At our Mini-THON, there will be music, dancing, games, dodgeball, basketball, food, drinks, snacks, DJs, raffle prizes, and more all night long," the NHS writes on the Four …

Resident of Children's Home of Easton charged with two thefts from Easton Area High School between October and December.
An 18-year-old resident of the Children’s Home of Easton has admitted to two theft incidents at Easton Area High School on Monday mornings in late October and early December, court records say. In the first incident, Marcus Long is accused of taking a silver Apple MacBook valued at $1,229 from a custodial maintenance break room and placing it in his backpack. That incident allegedly occurred Oct. 22. In the second incident, Long is accused of stealing an iPhone, a silver Nintendo DS and a Pokemon DS game, as well as bottles of cologne from the boys locker room. The items allegedly taken in the Dec. 3 incident are valued at $742, the records say. Criminal complaints in both cases do not specify if Long is a student at the high school. He …

The picture is part of a feature on photographer Rebecca Greenfield's "Coming of Age" project, which focuses on young women undergoing various rites of passages, whether it's a quinceañera or a wedding or a Bat Mitzvah or in this case, a prom. "I've photographed girls from a broad variety of backgrounds, but I find they share more similarities than differences," Greenfield told the magazine. Tickets for Easton Area High School's 2012-2013 basketball and wrestling seasons are now available online. Tickets are available through www.eastonrovertickets.com for both first-time ticket buyers and past season ticket holders. Season tickets for wrestling cost $5 per game, multiplied by the number of home games. For basketball season tickets, it's $4 per game for each home game. Every year, students at Easton Area High School get ready for the Red Rovers annual game against Phillipsburg with a big bonfire at the school. If you'd like to donate wood for the bonfire, you can drop it off Tuesday at the high school between 7:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. A message on the school district website asks that donors not give treated wood or tree branches.

School board members concerned about 'flat line' in Easton High School PSSA results.
Students in the Easton Area School District did better than the statewide average on the PSSA tests in the 2011-2012 school year. But at Easton Area High School, scores continued to be lower than at the other schools in the district, a notion that concerned school board members during a discussion of PSSA results Tuesday night. "It remains extremely troubling to me. If you look at the trend, it’s a flat line over many, many years," said board member Robert Moskaitis. "What is happening to change that?" He argued that one of the reasons residents of Riegelsville lobbied to move out of the Easton Area School District was due to PSSA scores. Teaching to take the test is a reality. We pulled our kids out of EASD and put them in private school. It's one of the best decisions we made. They are learning at a full grade level ahead of their EASD peers and we as parents don't have to rely on burearocrats in a failing system to educate our children.   more ›
