March has seen a steady decline in gas prices to the point that gas is cheaper now than last year. AAA continues to predict that the national average will crest lower than in recent years and as we head deeper into spring, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report. In 2011, the national average for regular unleaded peaked at $3.98 on May 5. In 2012 the price peaked at $3.94 on April 5. The national average this week is $3.658 for a gallon, down 3.4 cents from last week. In the Lehigh Valley, the average price of self-serve gasoline is $3.638 per gallon, 2.3 cents lower than a week ago, 12.1 cents lower than a month ago and 19.4 cents lower than a year ago. You probably haven't noticed and don't even agree. But it's the truth. Pennsylvanians are paying an average of 11.5 cents less today for a gallon of gas than we paid at this time last year, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report. The national average for a gallon in the state is now $3.698, down 2.5 cents from a week ago. In the Lehigh Valley, the average price of self-serve gasoline is $3.661 per gallon, 2.4 cents lower than a week ago, 8.3 cents lower than a month ago and 10.1 cents lower than a year ago. The national average retail price for a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline is $3.692, down 1.1 cents from a week ago. The national average for a gallon of gas has dropped 9 cents to begin March, which is opposite of what motorists are used to, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report. The price increased by 6 cents last year at this time and by 17 cents in 2011. In the Lehigh Valley, the average price of self-serve gasoline is $3.685 per gallon, 4.2 cents lower than a week ago, 2.5 cents lower than a month ago and 5.9 cents lower than a year ago. This was the second week in a row to see a decline. It is too soon to say whether retail prices have peaked for the spring, because there is still refinery maintenance to be completed, and much of the country must still transition to summer-blend gasoline, the report states. Palmer and Forks townships were prepared for a major winter storm, but the National Weather Service downgraded accumulations late Friday afternoon.
A major winter storm that was expected to rip the Northeast and New England Friday night into Saturday may not pack such a wallop in Palmer and Forks townships. The National Weather Service scaled down snow accumulations to 3-5 inches after initial reports suggested 6-10 inches of snow. The worst of the storm was expected to hit Friday night with heavy blowing snow expected. How much snow did you get? Tell us in the comments section below and post your snow photos to this article. Warm...Then Storm. That's what Action News in Philadelphia started its 11 p.m. newscast with and that's what we're supposed to be getting Wednesday. Mother Nature is full of surprises and one of them will be a winter high temperature near 60 for Jan. 30. Afternoon and evening rain Wednesday could be heavy, producing 1 to 2 inches and possible thunderstorms in a six-hour period, according to a hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service. The WFMZ forecast also calls for a warm day and some heavy rain. Flash flooding is also possible.
