ReplyRepublican candidate Andrew Parke has submitted a note of clarification within the article regarding one question, 'Regarding fiscal responsibility, have any of you reviewed the budget for current excess? How can we spend less on anything today to be better for our future?'
Here's what he wrote: We have a budgeted $3.7 million for our public works building, but the lowest total bid came in at $5.3 million. The gross discrepancy is due to the unique design where the building is partially underground and covered with a grassy hill. The architect has convinced us that this unique design is cost neutral, but I'm skeptical because the bids would suggest otherwise. The architect's redesign kept the underground, grassy-hill design and made the building smaller. The new bids have not come in yet. I like the design, but I'd rather build an above ground building for the price difference. We simply need to stop saying the design is cost-neutral and be honest about how much extra the unique design is costing the tax payers and determine how much smaller we're willing to make it in order to keep the design.
